Discovery Awards is an international platform which recognizes innovative assistive solutions and showcases the stories of grassroot innovators around the world.
Discovery Awards has its roots in Project Discovery, a platform to recognize innovators from the grassroots, which was initially started by EnAble India. The potential of Project Discovery to source and catalyze the creation of low tech and low-cost assistive solutions from the disability community for the community was very clearly obvious. Hence, this national level competition was scaled globally in collaboration with Zero Project as Discovery Awards. This is a one of its kind platform where assistive solutions for people with all kinds of disability are collected, collated and disseminated.
In India, that is for Project Discovery, we have 4 categories; daily-living, work-place, social inclusion and education & training solutions. For Discovery Awards, categories can change depending on the countries and socio-cultural context.
- Shoot in a landscape/ horizontal mode to get a wider shot
- Start with a short description of the problem you are facing
- Explain your solution at an appropriate moment in the video
- The video must be centred on the person with disability demonstrating the solution. Avoid showing their back.
- Make sure there is adequate lighting, minimum background noise and sufficient clarity
It’s very simple! Keep the above guidelines in mind and put the person with disability in the center. Talk about the problem and ensure the solution is demonstrated clearly for the jury. As our solutions are sourced from the grassroots, we don’t expect a high resolution or quality videos. Make sure the solution is visible and we’re good to go!
A single person with disability, organization or any stakeholder in the community may have different solutions that addresses challenges in multiple areas of life. Members are free to share them all.
For example, in India a girl with an upper limb amputation submitted 32 solution videos and person with spinal cord injury, 25+ solution videos.
Every country partner can nominate 2 solutions through a Google form that will be shared on 1st September. 2 winners will be selected based on a clear understanding of the problem and the demonstration of the assistive solution. The production quality of the video will not be taken into consideration.
Winners will be notified immediately after the jury selection, with a non-disclosure request. This ask is put forward as the official public announcement of the winners is done in the month of December.

The 2 final videos submitted by each country partner is automatically considered for the international jury nomination list. The jury panel consists of members with extensive experience and expertise in assistive solutions and the disability sector. To ensure diversity and minimize bias, the panel includes individuals from various countries around the world.
There will be 2 rounds of shortlisting. In the initial round, country partners will be invited to sit on the jury panel. In the final round, a small online event will be conducted during which partners will be invited to observe the discussions between jury members as they select the 2 winners. This is done to make selection process more transparent for every stakeholder involved. Country partners will also get an opportunity to engage with each other in a panel discussion.
